GitHub Copilot Adds Support for OpenAI GPT-5 and GPT-5 Mini Models

OpenAI’s GPT-5 and GPT-5 mini models are now available within GitHub Copilot, enhancing Copilot’s coding assistance capabilities for developers across a wide range of environments.

Availability in GitHub Copilot

  • GPT-5 mini: Accessible to all Copilot plans, including Copilot Free.
  • GPT-5: Restricted to paid Copilot plans (Individual, Business, Enterprise).
  • Supported within Copilot Chat on platforms such as:
    • github.com
    • Visual Studio Code (VS Code)
    • Visual Studio
    • JetBrains IDEs
    • Xcode
    • Eclipse
    • GitHub Mobile (via chat model picker)

Enabling Access to the New Models

  • Enterprise and Business Administrators:
    • Must opt-in via Copilot settings by enabling the GPT-5 and GPT-5 mini policy.
    • Once enabled, these models appear in the model picker for users across all supported IDEs.
  • Individual Paid Plans:
    • Users can select either model directly through the model picker in any supported IDE.
    • A one-time confirmation prompt is shown upon selection.
